Task 2 of the Use of English part of the exam is a gap-fill exercise. In this task, candidates are presented with a passage of text with some words missing, and are required to fill in the gaps with the correct word or phrase. The purpose of this task is to test candidates’ knowledge of grammar and language functions in context.
To complete this task successfully, candidates must be able to understand the overall meaning and purpose of the text, as well as the specific role that each missing word or phrase plays in the text. This may involve identifying the grammatical function of the missing element (e.g., verb, noun, adjective, etc.), as well as its meaning in relation to the rest of the text.
Candidates should also be aware that the words or phrases that they use to fill in the gaps must be appropriate in terms of both grammar and meaning, and that they may need to use their knowledge of collocations, word order, and other language features to ensure that their answers are correct.
In Reading and Use of English Part 2 there is a text with eight gaps. You have to write one word in each gap. Most missing words are ‘grammar words’ e.g.
- articles (the , a )
- auxiliary or modal verbs (are, is, can)
- pronouns (he, us)
- conjunctions (but, although)
- possessive adjectives (my, our)
- prepositions (at, to)
A few may be ‘meaning’ words, e.g. nouns, verbs, adjectives.
You must spell your answers correctly!
