New Year, New Language Goals

New Year, New Language Goals

So you want to learn a new language. Is January the best time?

New year's resolutions

The start of January is a time that’s not exactly looked forward to by most but we fill it with the potential to better versions of ourselves. This is the time where we promise ourselves we will go the gym more or eat better or even-learn a language. So as an educator and a language learner, I wanted to know: Is this the best time to start trying to improve your language abilities?

While a part of myself wants to scream- YES! I can appreciate that many new years resolutions fall to the wayside after the first couple of weeks. The main reason is that enthusiasm wains and learning a language is no easy task. It needs persistence and motivation to drive you forward. Being resolute in your desire to learn is fabulous but remember to be gentle with yourself. It’s a marathon not a sprint. Do not set yourself up for failure with a mammoth task.  Start but be realistic.

So how do you begin?

Scroll into learning

You already scroll through social media. It may your traditional form like Instagram or Tiktok, but don´t forget places like LinkedIn also host ways to learn. Follow some of your favs! You´ll find some great educational content on social media platforms these days. Simple and digestible videos and posts that you can spend a couple of minutes on each day.

Use it or Lose it

A mantra I stick to as a teacher. Use what you learn or you will forget it. We have to push ourselves to become active rather than passive users. If you ever wonder why your comprehension is great but then when it´s your turn to speak you can´t think of what to say this may be why. Try doing a language exchange, or joining a social group where you can practice your language of choice. Another good way is to join a speaking class. Learn new vocab and use it with a teacher.

Love it and learn it

Exposure to the language is key so watch your favourite tv show. What´s the catch? Change the language! Try watch the dubbed version of a tv show you love so that you can enjoy it all over again while hearing the story lines with whole new voice actors! You can also try listening to some new artists. Find a new band and practice! Change your video game language. Subconsciously learn the words to that game you´re trying to master. There are so many ways to incorporate the language into your fun activities. Don´t see it as a chore but rather an opportunity to learn through something you already love.

Dear teacher

Yes, of course its on my list. Find yourself a teacher! A good teacher can open up the world of language learning. I would say finding the right fit for you and the way you like to learn is key. If you have had a bad learning experience in the past, don´t let that deter you from reaching your goals. A teacher should be flexible to the students needs, wants and abilities. Find yourself a good teacher and they´ll help you reach for the stars.

So, start your language journey this January. There will be times when its difficult and when you don´t feel up to the challenge but there will also be these shiny break through moments where you will see your progress and be proud of how far you´ve come. Just remember to go at your own pace and keep moving forward. Find what works for you and make it fun and dynamic. It´s a process that should be appreciated. Your learning a whole new way to communicate!
