But grade-level text isn’t just a tool for academic success—it’s an equity tool. This session will focus on the ways that content-rich, grade-level texts cultivate knowledge, language, and comprehension skills, and what effective use looks like in today’s classrooms. The Evolving World of English Learning: A School’s-eye View
Marisa Monroe , Sergio Morales, Johan Mells
Today’s multilingual learners are beginning their English language learning education younger, with an expectation they will need to do more in English, in the academic classroom, in the workplace, and in their personal lives. This is a growing audience that includes international schools, bilingual schools, and other types of institutions teaching an international or national curriculum – and sometimes both. To support these goals, schools must focus on the learning outcomes they wish to achieve in English, as well as the skills, competencies, and mindset they need to equip students with to reach them. In this session, we’ve invited educators from schools grappling with these challenges to share their experiences, including how they are preparing learners with the English they need to access the curriculum.

Learner engagement and TBLT: Marrying the wisdom of teachers and researchers
Masatoshi Sato
In this seminar, I will critically evaluate TBLT research and its relevance to second language (L2) teaching. On the one hand, researchers have produced an amount of evidence supporting the impact of task-based interaction on L2 learning. This research has primarily investigated the nature of tasks, implementation processes of tasks, and students’ and teachers’ perceptions of tasks. On the other hand, teachers around the globe have reported difficulties when they implement tasks in their classes. Those include the lack of L2 production, first language use, and social relationships between learners, all indicating that learners may not engage with a task even when its effectiveness has been proven by researchers. To tackle this gap, I will explore psychological and social variables that may mediate learner engagement with tasks. I will argue that one option to increase learner engagement is to manipulate learner beliefs of and attitudes towards tasks. I will conclude the seminar by proposing research directions that may ultimately aid teachers to use tasks in more effective and efficient ways.

Story-telling is not just Telling a Story
Myriam Monterrubio
A story is something that everybody is familiar with. All of us used to love listening to stories repeatedly when we were kids. A story can be motivating and fun as it creates a “real world” when you are reading it. Using stories in our class also helps our students to practice the four skills in a natural, memorable and meaningful way. Join this session to help our little learners develop a passion for reading, for life!

Peer Assisted Learning System (PALS): An innovative approach to collaborative learning in high stakes exams such as IELTS
Reshmi Murali
How do you promote learner autonomy? How do you maintain learner motivation outside the classroom? How can you develop skills and strategies in your learners to learn collaboratively? These are some of the questions that I aim to address in this webinar on peer-assisted learning system. The findings covered in this talk are based on the experiences conducting several intensive, closed-group, test-prep courses for nursing professionals in India at the British Council. We aim to provide a toolkit to conduct, manage, and benefit from a new way of collaborative learning through peer groups, especially in the context of high-stakes exams. In this talk, I will give a brief overview of how peer-groups help support self-study and develop motivation and confidence among learners in all contexts including exam prep. It will also outline the challenges faced by teachers and peer groups in conducting these sessions, suggest practical solutions for mitigating these challenges, and ways to monitor, evaluate and manage participation and motivation. The most important feature of the talk is the adaptability of our approach and how these peer-groups can be successfully conducted across many learning contexts.

Artificial Intelligence for language learning
Lindsey Klein
This webinar will be aimed at illustrating the potential of Artificial Intelligence for language learning, with particular reference to oracy and automatic feedback. An example of programme named Robotel will be presented, highlighting main results of some research projects conducted with sample of students in different countries, including Italy. By combining a digital platform with well-thought-through curricula, Robotel aims at transforming the way students learn a language so that it is more active and authentic: in fact, the student is constantly engaged and can reflect on his/her language experience thanks to the support of Artificial Intelligence.
