Sustainability in ELT - fatigue or taboo?
Anca de Vries & Christopher Graham
During the recent IATEFL conference in Harrogate, the media team interviewed a number of delegates around key ELT topics, including sustainability. The team noted that definitions of sustainability differed, and a large percentage of people struggled or were uncomfortable discussing sustainability on camera.
This was quite a surprise, and in this conversation, Anca and Chris will drill down into the interface between ELT and sustainability. The conversation will be free-form but have five distinct sections.
1 The background – the IATEFL questions about sustainability – a look at numbers and responses.
2 Discussion – around the motives for the teachers’ reactions to the questions.
3 Discussion - what is sustainability in ELT – both in terms of direct environmental impacts but also more broadly across the community in terms of, for example, professional development, materials design, and the role of technology. We’ll look at capacity-building, localisation, and decentring amongst other things.
4 Discussion - the challenges around discussing and implementing environmental and broader sustainability in ELT.
5 Discussion – some ways of overcoming the challenges, including some practical ideas for the classroom, and beyond, into the broader institution.

What if teaching kids and teens online could be even more efficient than in person?
Carsten Booth
Despite in-depth training sessions, cutting-edge technology, and the much-acclaimed promise of teaching students anywhere in the world, teachers who encounter teaching kids and teens online for the first time sometimes think that it is a meagre substitute to traditional, in-person teaching.
But, what if the constraints unique to this digital medium were not a disadvantage to learners and teachers, but instead a unique opportunity that could yield even better results than in physical classrooms? What if deeper forms of concentration, increased levels of practice and above all, better learning were not just possible, but are already happening, and will only grow in the near future?
During this webinar, come discover the hidden potential of this medium, how it can foster accelerated language learning for younger learners, and learn practical examples that you can use right away in your own teaching.

Humanising Online Language Learning
Julie Wallis
Resistance to online synchronous and asynchronous learning has been an issue for those forced into sudden change. However, online, blended and hybrid learning (both synchronous and asynchronous) is here to stay. As an inspector and as a teacher trainer, I have had the opportunity to observe many classes and I will be sharing my reflections.
The session will develop ways that online platforms and tools can be used to humanise online teaching i.e. how to make it learner-led, putting the learner at the heart of the process. I will consider and review good teaching techniques in an online context, how to set up tasks and activities to engage and motivate learners, and how to involve learners in a continuous humanistic assessment process to improve their performance in a learning-centred context.
Teaching and learning online can be carried out in a safe, interactive and enjoyable atmosphere whilst still ensuring quality language teaching and supporting learners in achieving results.

Helping ESL Students with Life Online – Digital Literacy in Adult Ed
Katie Davis & Adam Robinson
As we teach, learn, work, and interact more online and with our devices, it has become increasingly apparent that there is a gap in the digital literacy skills of many of our adult learners. These skills have become crucial not only in navigating the day-to-day, but also in achieving success academically and in the workplace. This webinar will focus on activities for adult ESL students to help develop essential digital literacy skills in areas such as privacy and security, managing your digital footprint, online etiquette, and tips for online or hybrid classes. Using examples from the new edition of Stand Out, we will discuss how to seamlessly incorporate digital literacy skills into ESL instruction.

CLIL classroom assessment: the process and the product
Ali Shuhsuan Ke & Vivian Wen-Chi Liu
Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is spreading rapidly worldwide. In Taiwan, over one thousand primary and secondary schools have been implementing or experimenting with CLIL courses since 2016, but they have lacked a valid assessment tool to measure students’ learning progress and promote effective learning.
This webinar will present how the LTTC developed appropriate assessment tools for CLIL programs through cross-curricular collaboration. Exemplary listening and speaking assessments will be used to demonstrate how language and content learning objectives can be fulfilled without compromising the depth of content knowledge. At the end of the presentation will be a Q&A session.
